News: Conference on Computerization of Polish Archives in Memorial Places

On 23rd and 24th October, 2003 in National Stutthof Museum in Sztutowo the 1st Conference "Computerization of Polish Archives in Memorial Places" took place. The organizer of the conference was National Stutthof Museum and among the guests were representatives of polish martyrology museums (Oświęcim, Lublin, Rogoźnica, Łambinowice/Opole), institutions directing museums and archives (The Ministry of Culture, Director General of State Archives), State Committee for Scientific Research, universities, where scientists deal with problems of computerization (Faculty of History and Archive Science, University of Copernicus in Torun; Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunication and Informatics, Technical University of Gdansk) and the representative of the company providing some of the software used in museums. Among the observers of the conference were the representatives of the Inquiry and Search Office of Polish Red Cross from Warsaw, Institute of National Remembrance and computer-science related company GfaI from Berlin.
The main purpose of the conference was the discussion and exchange of experiences related to digitalization of archives and presentation of work already carried out.
Important part of the meeting was the presentation of international MEMORIAL Project that is being realized in cooperation of Stutthof Museum, financed from EU funds and with help of State Committee for Scientific Research. The main purpose of the Project is to develop set of tools that could enable automatic processing of scanned documents to the Digital Document form.
Participants of the Conference visited also the Archive of Stutthof Museum - one of the best and most complete Archives of documents related to Holocaust all over the world.
