Summer Camp

Gallery

Between July and August, 2005, for the third time a 14-day summer camp organized by the Action Sign of Penance Service for Peace and Stutthof Museum, took place in Sztutowo.
In this year except from Poles and Germans, youth from Ukraine took part for the first time. Every year participants of the meetings concentrate their work on preservation and commemoration of the former camp area. This time all the tasks were related to the building of the so-called 'New Kitchen'. The group of 22 people with their supervisor from ASF (Steffi & Johnny) and supervisor of the Ukrainian group worked for 6 days to clean the building area from bushes and small trees. At the end, the information board with the description of bulding's functions was placed.
Apart from these tasks, members of the summer camp occupied themselves with history of Stutthof and national socialism. In small groups, they looked into copies of archive documentation concerning different subjects (prisoner, SS staff, witnesses' relations), that were later presented to other members of the meeting. There were also 3 so called 'national evenings', where history and tradition of members' countries were presented. The complement of the project were tours to locations of historical meaning - Gdańsk (where group met with former prisoner - Mr. L. Lendzion) and visiting the castle of Malbork.
Members returned to their homes with satisfaction and hope for next meetings. Previous observations and experiences connected with organisation and realisation of this kind of meetings allow us to hope that a similar project will be organized in Sztutowo in next year.
