Anniversary in Buchenwald

On the 11th of April 2008 a delegation, among P. Tarnowski, P. Piechnik and M. Owsiński, of Museum Stutthof participated in the 63th anniversary of the liberation of Concentration Camp Buchenwald. The representatives of the Museum Stutthof laid down a wreath on the memorial tablet there where the appel field was and also met other delegations. This visit also offered the possibility to perambulate the concept of remembering in the memorial Buchenwald, the obtained buildings and objects as well as the constant exhibition. This day also made it also possible to see the new opened Youth Meeting Center.


Students of the III LO in Gdańsk in Museum Stutthof

On the 27th of March a group of pupils from III LO in Gdańsk were visiting Museum Stutthof. Partly this group was mixed with pupils of III LO's partner schools in Great Britain and Denmark. This day the group passed in a photo workshop treating the topic: "Reportage about a visit in Museum Stutthof". The work of the pupils was based on prepared material. Through this materials and the supervision of a guide the pupils had the possibility to independently visit the exhibition.

Conference of the board of Museum Stutthof

On the 18th of March the annual conference of the board of Museum Stutthof took place in the scientific faculty of Museum Stutthof in Sopot. On the action plan was the nomination of the new board members as well as the presentation of the working plan 2008 through the director. The conference was chaired by Prof. J. Szlinga (UMK Toruń).


Decisive convention of the Pomeranian branch of the Polish Museum Employees

On 14th of March a delegation of museum employees of the Museum Stutthof participated on a decisive convention of the Pomeranian branch of the Polish Museum Employees. A new chairman for the next period of office was appointed. Member of the new board is also an employee of Museum Stutthof, Marcin Owsiński.


German-Polish conference of teachers

From 4th to 9th of March the Museum Stutthof co-arranged the 2nd conference for German and Polish teachers about the topic: Historical-political education: Practices and themes for education in memorials and museums about the newest history in German-Polish youth meetings.
This project was thought for German and Polish teachers, whose wanted to organize youth meetings and field excursions to Gdańsk and Museum Stutthof.
For the realization of these aims the following activities where chosen:
- Gdańsk: City sightseeing in the form of a game.
- Museum Stutthof: Independent formulation and visitation based on teaching aids and supervised by a guide.
- Gdańsk: Workshop about Cooperative Learning. An interesting possibility for the organization of a youth meeting.
- Gdańsk: Visit of the exhibition "Way to Freedom".
The results of this conference will be presented through the participants at the end of this event.
The project was realized through a finance of the foundation of German - Polish co-operation.


The International Auschwitz Comitee

On the 24th of January 2008 Piotr Tarnowski, the director of Museum Stutthof in Sztutowo, participated in the 14.Convention of the International Auschwitz Comitee. During his speech he presented brevely the history of KL Stutthof, the actual situation and the needs as well as the next projects of the memorial place. The informations from the director were met with interest of attendees.

The International Auschwitz Comitee is bound to the Council of Ministers. His duty is to support the co-operation with the diverse ministries, voivodships, the local authorities as well as the directors of the museums, whom are in charge of protecting the memorials, so that these organs can fulfill their duties.

Chairman of the Comitee is Prof. Władysław Bartoszewski, Vice-chairman are Prof. Isreal Gutmann and Stefan Wilkanowicz. Secretary is Dr. Marek Zając.


ANNUAL CHRISTMAS MEETING (2007)

On the 4th of January, 2008, for the ninth time a traditional New Year's meeting took place. The participants of the meeting were former prisoners of KL Stutthof but also Józef Wysocki -the Bishop of Elblag, Ryszard Szramka -parish priest of Sztutowo, Mirosław Golon-the director of the Institute of National Remembrance, the employees of the Stutthof Museum, students and teachers from schools in Sztutowo, Stegna, Mikoszewo, Drewnica, Tujsk and Nowy Dwór Gdański.

Students from Sztutowo prepared a historical programme based on excerpt of authentic letters of the prisoner F. Ładyka to his mother. Musical setting was provided by the choir of Primary School in Drwenica under Mr A. Michalczuk's direction.

Piotr Tarnowski Dyrektor of the Museum Stutthof in Sztutowo

The Minister for Culture and National Heritage appoints a new Director of the Muzeum Stutthof in Sztutowo. From 23th of October 2007 Piotr Tarnowski assumes this office.


Pupils meeting of the Regionalschule Samtens and Zespołu Szkół in Sztutowo

From the 15th to the 18th of october 2007 the Museum Stutthof was meeting point for pupils of the Gymnasium Samtse (Regionale Schule, Ruegen, Germany) and pupils of Stutthof (school association called "victims" of Stutthof).

The main goal of that meeting was a mutual to get to know each other, what should establish the beginning of a firm cooperation. The activities occurred in the Museum were focused on the preparation of a multimedia presentation, which should document this meeting and the history of Stutthof. For that we were using professional video cameras and cameras, they were possibilities to film and take some photos and the collection of historical documents about Stutthof. The pupils visited together the city of Malbork and the city of Danzig.

We can regard this meeting as a success. The started cooperation and the acquaintances surely will continued. The pupils of Stutthof already planning a visit to their German friends.

Workshop of the Gymnasium N.11 in Stutthof

On the 9th and 11th of october 2007 there passed a workshop in the Muzeum Stutthof with two big groups (teachers and pupils from Gymnasium Nr.11 in Gdańsk. Mixed peer groups were elaborating in a few hours the following issues. Them they presented later to their comrades:

1. The Concentration Camp Stutthof - the history in a nutshell
2. Traces of the past in the memorial - what stays after this years
3. The Muzeum nowadays - What function it executes, who is visiting it and how
4. The inmates - What somebody could glean about them
5. My own reflections, emotions, what I would like to express to other people about it and what this experience left

Integral part of each exercise was a documentation of each peer group with photos or other ways (computer). These photos were also used later for a illustration of the different presentations and consequently they were adapted to the various peer group needs. The pupils were elaborating the issues by using prepared working materials. The presentations occurred in front of the other pupils so that the issues were given by the pupils to understand their topics better.

Teachers and pupils were both the same opinion that the time together passed in the museum was more interesting than a "passive" tour through the museum with a guide.

Visit of the Priests of the Polish Firemen

On the 10th of September in the year 2007 the museum Stutthof attended a group above 120 persons. This group was composed by Priests of the Fire Brigade from all over Poland. Such meetings of polish priests take place every year, this time it was in Kąty Rybackie near Sztutowo. The visitation included a tour through the former Concentration Camp and a pray in front of the Cross beside the former Crematorium.

School's group from Luebeck at the Museum Stutthof

On 5 September 2007 the class 10c of the Emanuel Geibel six-form high school from Luebeck was to guest at the Museum Stutthof. The 22 pupils wanted to experience more over the heavy life of the prisoners in the camp.

For this they were cared for by the Austrian volunteers in small groups, in which they should prepare different questions by documents. The pupil salso strolled through the museum to detect more informations. After the collection of information the pupils made themselves to arrange the information and to write these on posters in the seminar area of the museum . A plenum formed the conclusion of the seminar, at which the individual groups presented their results.

Attendance of guests from Germany

On 17th. and 18th. May a group of historical students of several citizens of Berlin universities was at the museum Stutthof to guest.

Before their attendance in Sztutowo the students participated in several seminars over the German Konzentrationsalger, which were held at the technical University of Berlin by the historian Professor Wolfgang Benz. Professor Benz took also care of the travel's group, and led her.

The goal of the attendance was becoming acquainted with the history of the camp Stutthof, in special onecloser realizations over the fate of the arrested ones among them for example the Jewish prisoners, as well as the question of the building and enterprise of the external bearings of the KL Stutthof. These topics were presented by the scientific coworkers of the museum in a particularly arranged lecture. The guests had also the possibility to get used with the organization and the enterprise of the museum as well, for example, they could throw also a view to the research establishments into the large collection of the Archives in the museum Stutthof.

Part of this study journey to Stutthof was also an attendance of the city of Gdansk and its memory places from the years 1939-1945.

New attendance possibility at the museum Stutthof

Starting from April of the yearly 2007 visitors can visit those individually or in small groups the museum Stutthof from a new information system to profit. It acts thereby around a small computer with Touchscreen. This can be expenditure-borrowed against a fee. Thus one can listen to the explanation about the Museum and browse the archive in the same time during the visitof the museum. The entire presentation lasts 70 min. one can points however at any time jump over and so shorten the time. This service is at present in two languages available: English and Polish. In more near future still further languages will come. The fee for a computer amounts to 15 PLN.

Polish-Israeli youth meeting in the museum Stutthof

At the 8th March a group of young people visited the museum Stutthof. During visit over the area of the former KL Stutthof they were accompanied by the former prisoner Chaima Kozienicki.

The program of the attendance covered a becoming acquainted with of the history of the camp, the personal history of a former prisoner of the camp, in addition, a meeting of Israeli pupils with Polish young persons, pupils of the school for the memory of the victims of Stutthof, in Stutthof.

The first part of the meeting took place at the museum Stutthof, which became second part shifted in the hotel Kahlberg in Krynica Morska. The common meeting was above all importantly for mutual becoming acquainted with of both countries (the pupils had before already contact over E-Mail), for a common reflection to history and also a view of the presence of both countries, and also the start of a co-operation of both schools. In the 10 most important and most valuable words to the present values of the youth the result of the work of the mixed groups in three languages on boards was presented.

At the point of the delegation from Israel was among other things the mayor from Dolina Yardena.

Polish-German meeting of youth

From 20 to 24th of March, 2006, Polish-German meeting of youth took place in Stutthof. The participants of the meeting were people from high schools in Braunschweig (carers: Astrid Schrobsdorff and Fredegar Hetze) and from Nowy Dwor Gdanski (carers: Beata Kloska-Dziewicz and Joanna Cybulska). From the Museum's side Marcin Owsinski was the carer of the meeting.
Participants of the meeting, besides extended guided tour of the former camp and all the exhibitions, were primarily involved in cooperative development of issues related to the history of KL Stutthof and the fate of its prisoners. The work based on files with educational materials containing fragments of scientific studies, relations, photographs and replicas of original documents stored in Stutthof Archive.
The result of each polish-germant group's work were maps and charts prepared for presentation on the exhibition. Individual stages of work and stay of the group were documented on photos by a few appointed members of the meeting. The solemn opening of the exhibition with results of a few days of work took place on 24th of March in cultural center of Zulawy in Nowy Dwor Gdanski.
Integral part of the meeting was also a 2 day stay in Gdansk, connected with visiting places related to the history of the city and its region.
Both the course of the meeting, the exhibition and youth' opinion on the meeting was assessed very positively. Relations between schools, teachers and pupils started with the help of the Museum will be definitely useful in the future. Because of these reasons, the meeting was typical for activities performed by Educational Department of Stutthof Museum.

Organisation and the course of the meeting were made possible thanks to help from Polish-German Cooperation of Youth.

61 March of Death Anniversary

On the 25th of January, 2006 in Gdansk-Oliwa a mass was concelebrated in the intention of KL Stutthof victims. Mass was conducted by the archbishop Tadeusz Goclowski, metropolitan of Gdansk. After the mass, a meeting was held with archbishop and former prisoners - including members of evacuation, pupils from the school by the name of Stutthof Heroes in Rozlazin,the school director Tadeusz Spierewka with teachers, teachers and the director Ewa Gebarowska from the school by the name of The Deatch March Martyrs in Garczegorz, the consul of Germany, Konstanty Rosener from the Department of Citizen Affairs in Provincial Office of Gdansk. Also the vicedirector Piotr Piechnik and custodin Elzbieta Grot participated in the meeting.
The archbishop has recalled the tragedy of KL Stutthof prisoners in the homily and emphasized that pupils have the occasion to take part in the history lesson together with members of these dramatical incidents. Sharing the host, he wished for the prisoners many years to live and to be with us as long as possible.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS MEETING (2005)

On the 5th of January, 2006, a traditional meeting of KL Stutthof former prisoners with youth from schools and employees of Stutthof Museum took place. J. Styrna - the Bishop of Elblag also came for the ceremony. Christmas carols and other songs were performed by the choir from the school under the name of Stutthof Victims Memory and the ensemble from the Cultural Centre in Stegna.
