Museum Characteristics
The museum of Stutthof in Sztutowo was established as a result of an
initiative of the Council for Commemoration of Struggle and Martyrdom
and by the decision of the District Council of Gdańsk from 12th of March
1962. Since 1st of April 1966 the museum has been subordinated to the
culture department of the Ministry of Culture and Arts.
RESEARCH SECTION:
with 2 subsections:

Subsection for the history of the Concentration Camp Stutthof:
carries out research of what happened in this camp, its extermination
functions and the position of Stutthof in the system of Nazi extermination
camps

Subsection for the history of the Pomorze region under Nazi occupation
in 1939-1945:
deals with the extermination policy of the Nazi forces and the activities
of the resistance movement in this area
THE ARCHIVES SECTION:
collects and describes any documentation concerning the ex-camp such as
records, objects, photographs, reports and memories of ex-prisoners and
various publications. On the basis of the preserved documents the archive
complies lists of all ex-prisoners, so it can give out certificates confirming
anybody`s stay in the camp.
RESEARCH AND EDUCATIONAL SECTION:
deals with all activities connected with organising permanent and temporary
exhibitions, catering the visitors, training guides, also informative
and promotional activity and cooperation with social organisations and
schools.
THE RENOVATION AND CONSERVATION SECTION:
organises and carries out conservation and protection work within the
area of the ex-camp. It also preserves order in the outdoor part of the
museum.
ADMINISTRATION:
provides administrative services to the sections mentioned above. It also
organises the protection of the buildings and exhibitions of the museum.
